Description: Imagine an intentional community dedicated to honoring the richness of difference, recognizing that conflict is human and that resolving it is learned behavior. A community that knows that freedom requires responsibility, that operates from consensus, understanding we are interdependent and that all human beings require celebration. Now imagine that this intentional community exists not in some mountain mecca, but in the dregs of the inner city, a traditionally impoverished neighborhood constantly incorporating new waves of immigrants. Imagine that it is so successful that people who have left the community send their children and grand children back to go to summer camp to learn its values. Welcome to the South Side Settlement House. After 112 years, the South Side Settlement House closed June 24, 2011, during depressed times for lack of funding.
