Hello all you lovely people out there in Film Land.
I'm John and if you are looking at this profile you'll be wanting to know my credentials as a Sound Recordist.
I trained as An Actor (BA (hons) Performng Arts Middlesex Uni 1990) but worked as a technician to support my performing career.
I've been working in Sound (and Film) for a long time in various ways. I spent 15 years working on live gigs (Theatre, Tours, Live Comedy) as a Stage Manager and Sound Engineer and got several thousand gigs under my belt. (The Comedy Store, The Globe, The Roundhouse, BBC Children In Need to name but a few.)
From there I moved into Indie Film as a Writer/Director, set up Fellaheen Films in 2005 and won a Hitchcock Award in 2005 for my short film "The Service Industry".
Since then I've kept moving forward and growing and learning sometimes out of sheer curiosity and other times out of necessity to the point where I can now Write, Direct, Produce, Record and Edit Sound, Shoot and Edit Video, 1st AD and a whole lot more besides. I've been described as "a cog who can reshape to make any production run more smoothly."
In the last 5 years I've worked on around 400 videos. At least 300 of these as a self shooter.
I'm also an award winning Radio Producer/Director with Flame CCR based on Merseyside.
I'm currently directing a dramatized version of John Bunyan's "The Holy War" for Flame as a follow up to a 25 episode version of "Pilgrim's Progress" (nominated for a Jerusalem Award in 2014).
I think I can safely say I'm not your average Sound Man. On set I know my job but more than that I see the bigger picture. I understand the film making process from beginning to end so I know where the tiny part I'm working on fits in at any time. I know when to grind things to a halt to make the sound crystal clear but also when I can let things slide just a little and fix up in post because we only have 2 hours left to get 5 more set ups before losing the light for the day.
I work hard, quickly and accurately and I'm generally pretty easy to get along with.
